Harry is a photographer and artist whose father was brought up in Brancaster. He is fascinated by this area and its capacity to stir the heart. We asked him to write a couple of paragraphs about 'Why Brancaster'.

Brancaster is the village in North Norfolk where we live. We enjoy it for the community it provides for sure, but let's put that aside for a moment and consider something else. What about that peripheral aspect on the edge of the village where we look outwards, north, beyond.

If you walk to the dunes where Brancaster meets the sea you will witness something unique. The view is North for a start, which is unusual in England, and very different to a view East. The aspect is sharper, keener, and distinct in its Northern promise. But also, and here is the thing, if you look to your right you witness the clear horizontal thread that is Scolt Head island.

Scolt is a place held in high regard by all who live here, which is quite something for somewhere that barely exists in its makeup of just sand, water and air. Yet this place seems to be charged with something so enigmatic that it almost belongs more acutely in the mind than it does in reality. We take it home with us. It expands as we dream of it. Brancaster as a place is the linch pin, the anchor, the firm ground that allows us to catch a glimpse of an island that is somewhere else. A place of such otherness and such vigour that it can fill our waking dreams.
